Diuretics #2: Function & Affinity in the Body

Herbal diuretics are broadly defined as any plants that have action within the urinary system. Within the large group of herbal diuretics, certain herbs and plants will interact more directly with certain body systems. Examples:

  • Hawthorn – specific diuretic for the cardiovascular system
  • Cleavers – it has affinity for the skin. It also happens to be tonic, which makes it safe for long term use.
  • Boerhavia Root – used for kidney and urinary systems

When designing formulas with herbal diuretics, it’s important to consider short-term vs. long-term use. For example, we avoid choosing very strong herbal diuretics, such as celery seed, for long-term use formulas because they are not meant to be used long-term. Instead, we look at all body systems for which a plant may or may not have affinity, and determine safety for short-term vs. long-term use.

There’s lots to consider when using herbal diuretics. That’s why we formulate from a whole body approach, and not just addressing a single symptom.
