Thyroid Strong™: Wolff-Chaikoff Effect
The thyroid gland is elegant in its capacity to handle iodine efficiently, whether it’s scarce or it’s available in excess. The thyroid handles excess iodine through a process known as the Wolff-Chaikoff effect, in which large quantities of iodine are rejected to protect the gland from producing excessive quantities of thyroid hormones.
For most of us, the Wolff-Chaikoff effect is a temporary state, and our bodies return back to normal when iodine levels are stabilized. However, for individuals susceptible to thyroid conditions, their bodies might not return back to its normal state after the Wolff-Chaikoff effect, resulting in hypothyroidism.
The Wolff-Chaikoff effect is why you won’t find large amounts of iodine in our Thyroid Strong formula.
